December 7, 2012

My first appointment today is a lady, late 40’s, educated, divorced, and her long term goal is marriage. She saw my ad one day and ran into a stranger at a social function the next and ended up in a conversation about the fact that they both had just both spoken to me about Perfectly Matched. The other lady was a referral from Marsha, who married Jay in 1997, and has sent me more referral business than anyone else.

She said “I thought it was ironic that your name came up in conversation the same day I spoke to you.”

I said “Maybe it was a sign!” At the very least, it inspired her to call me back and book and appointment the next day.

She is about to see the light at the end of the tunnel in that both of her children will be in college in a couple of years.

She said “I would prefer to meet a man whose kids are in about the same age range as mine, as opposed to someone who has very young children.”

I said “That is a very common request and someone with children closer to the ages of yours will be more compatible with you.”

She belongs to a wine group and a running club and has done a couple of half marathons. She enjoys hiking, cross country skiing, cooking, concerts, theater and traveling.

She appreciates a man who also takes care of himself and can share in some of her physical activities.

I asked her if she was emotionally available and in the right frame of mind to meet someone new.

She said “I AM. I was married for over 20 years and I don’t have any anger about the divorce or towards my ex-husband. In fact, occasionally when I am around him I walk away thinking, what was I thinking, staying married to him for so long. I am thrilled to be single and start dating.”

My second appointment is a lady, early 40’s, educated, ABS (always been single), and her long term goal is marriage.

I asked her if she wanted to have children.

She said “I love kids but I had my tubes tied when I was in my 20’s because I knew I never wanted to be pregnant.”

She downhill skis, hikes, loves to cook, went to culinary school, and she changes Christmas dinner every year. No one knows what she is going to cook for Christmas dinner until they arrive. She is a pretty darn good pool player and she enjoys watching others play pool.

I asked her what her age preference was for a man.

She said “I have laid my inner cougar to rest and I prefer a man closer to my own age, 40 to 47.”

She is going to take a look at her budget and decide if this is something she can afford to do now, or if she might have to wait until the holidays are over.

She said “I really want to take advantage of your 50% off until December 15, but I don’t know if I can do this right now.”

I said “I can break it up into two payments a month apart if that would help.”

She said “How about three payments?”

I said “Sure.” One of the nice things about owning my own business is I can do whatever it takes to make this work for someone, especially someone like her who really wants to do this.

She is going to call me back next week and my gut feeling is she will follow through.

I received a Christmas card from Nancy and Keith again this year. They met and married through Perfectly Matched 16 years ago. They both have children from a previous marriage and in the Christmas card she said they now share nine grandchildren. I really appreciate them remembering me every year and all their updates.

It makes me feel like I have been in business a long, long time. Oh, wait a minute, I HAVE.

Today, December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day, has made me miss my Dad more than anything else since he died September 3rd. He served in World War II, the Korean war, the Berlin Airlift, and although he did not go to Vietman, he was still in the Air Force during Vietnam. It was his Pearl Harbor story I loved hearing about the most and I heard it every year. He was just 18 years old and he was thrilled when they made him a pilot and he was going to go into combat. Seriously, he was thrilled. As it turns out, he was one of the most decorated pilots in World War II. SO proud of you, Dad, hope you are flying high somewhere else!
